Balancing Modernization and Preservation for 21st-Century Students

The Maurice & Laura Falk lecture halls are located on Duquesne University’s campus in the historic Richard King Mellon Hall of Science, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the mid-20th century. These amphitheater-style lecture halls are located on the ground floor and seat roughly 250 students for classes within the School of Science and Engineering.

The renovation of the lecture hall was conceived as a careful balance between modernization and preservation, enhancing performance, comfort, and aesthetics while maintaining the space’s already successful acoustic character. Work began with selective demolition and asbestos remediation in the ceiling, followed by the installation of new acoustic ceiling tiles and recessed troffer lighting to improve both sound control and illumination. Acoustic wood baffles were added to the rear wall to maintain the hall’s clear voice quality and introduce a feeling of warmth.

Finish upgrades included new carpet tile flooring along the steps and leveling underneath the seating, along with multi-colored acoustic wall panels that double as sound control and visual interest. The space was further enhanced with new fixed and movable seating with integral tablet arms, supporting flexible learning formats, and a new lectern to anchor instruction. Together, these updates create a refreshed, high-performance environment that balances functionality, comfort, and visual identity.
