Meeting the Need of Patients Beyond Primary Care

Located in Vanceburg, Kentucky, the project sought to create a healthcare center that could service the needs of its patients beyond primary care. The goal of the approximately 25,000 SF building was to connect the brand of Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) to Vanceburg, the community that it serves and will become a part of. The building echoes the beauty of the region, reminiscent of the barns that dot the landscape. The orientation sought to create a beacon for patients exiting Kentucky 10 while maintaining views for patients and staff out to the landscape. Internally, pitched ceilings in the main concourse allow for large daylight opportunities and an openness and welcoming feeling to patients visiting the facility.

This facility features primary care clinics (with room for expansion), imaging, blood draw, physical therapy, and a hospital run pharmacy. Two entrances were strategically located to allow greater access to the different service lines within, while maintaining a connected concourse. This afforded those entering for rehab minimized steps and additionally helps to reduce the crossover of patient populations. Large windows in the rehab gym bring ample daylight into the space, while also giving patients a view to enjoy during their sessions. Patients utilizing the primary clinic find convenient back corridors connecting blood draw and imaging to allow them to receive appropriate testing post exam without the need to exit to a public location first. The staff spaces are opened to the perimeter of the building to take advantage of the natural light and views that the site had to offer.
