The new surgical expansion at Wyandot Memorial Hospital brings leading surgical design to a critical access hospital. This is an expansion from 1 OR to 2 general ORs, 1 robotic capable OR, and a dedicated prep/recovery department. The design focused on the indoor quality of the clinical spaces for both staff and patients, while also improving the visitor experience to the hospital and surgical department.

The design incorporates best practices in the areas of one way flows and universal design. By creating universal style prep/recovery bays, this allows the hospital to capitalize on a smaller footprint and greater flexibility over time. Each room is designed to be Phase 1 recovery capable. As rooms are typically needed by prep patients in the morning and Phase 1/Phase 2 recovery in the afternoons, the staff can flex rooms as needed according to patient volumes.

The one way flows of materials in the operating rooms was achieved through a clean core concept and helps streamline the process while minimizing cross overs. Designed to allow for the existing department to remain operational, the new ORs were placed in the new addition. Here the rooms can have improved floor to floor heights to accommodate modern ceiling mounted technologies and can be constructed without disturbing the existing OR.

Clerestory windows were incorporated to allow natural light into the clean core, central sterile department, and the ends of surgical hallways. which are normally hidden deep within the building. The reception area was designed to be a calming environment for patients and their families during what can be stressful times. Extra attention was given to create softer groups of various seating styles instead of the typical bus terminal style seating. This allows for patients & family members to choose the seating style that they prefer. This area was also designed with plenty of natural daylight and touch points where they can easily seek assistance.
