Patient Needs at the Core of Every Detail

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital’s 4th Floor Multiple Sclerosis Care Center and Outpatient Infusion Clinic was a 9,700 SF interior renovation integrating two departments into one holistic suite design. The project consisted of nine exam rooms, sixteen infusion treatment bays, and seven offices designed for individuals with limited mobility. The entire project is 100% accessible – having larger restroom to accommodate for wheelchair or motorized scooters. Patients with multiple sclerosis begin to lose strength in legs or sides of body, therefore we designed each room: exam room, infusion bay, and toilet rooms to accommodate for right-sided and left-sided strength. Rubber flooring was selected in clinical spaces to prevent tripping and ease mobility. 

Clinical testing of patients includes walking and vision testing. Subtle changes were designed in the flooring colors to delineate distance markers, elements that staff members find successful when administering these tests. The infusion bays have natural daylight and views to the city while creating a calming atmosphere with natural finishes throughout the space. Each individual bay has controls to dim lighting and regulate temperature per the patient’s preference to create an individualized healing environment. The layout of the treatment bays allowed patients a variation of privacy levels – from complete private to opening bays open for patient camaraderie - while utilizing cutting edge technology for television and music customization.
