A Hospital as Unique as its Patients

American School and University, 2018 Outstanding Design, Educational Interiors Showcase
DesignGroup worked with OSUWMC to renovate 59,000 SF on floors 1, 8, 9 and 10 of the old James Cancer Hospital to transform it into the new Brain and Spine Hospital. The goal was to prioritize program objectives, while balancing the interior standards established by OSUWMC with the creation of a new brand for the Neurological Institute. Most importantly, these components enhance spaces that are sensitive to the needs of neurological patients.

The renovation of the first floor lobby was an opportunity to create the brand and first impression for the Neurological Institute. Creating a welcoming space with user friendly wayfinding was key when caring for patients with neurological issues.

The three upper floors have a total of 90 private beds that are grouped in disease-specific units, including an epilepsy monitoring unit, progressive care beds, neuro “safe” unit, a geriatric-psych unit, and acute rehabilitation. In addition, accommodating patient families on these floors was integral to the success of these units. While incorporating OSUWMC’s new brand in the finishes, the team explored design that keeps in mind the safety of patients, as well as their potential sensory responsiveness.

Consistent communication with OSUWMC, the Neurological Institute, the construction manager, and the planning and design team was key to ensure this state-of-the-art program maximized the budget. In order to do this, DesignGroup created a schedule with workshops to touch base along the way. By getting the CM involved early on with conceptual cost estimating, the team was focused on eliminating re-work while meeting the goals of the program.
