This overflow NICU unit is located on the 5th floor of Riverside Methodist Hospital and is a partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
As part of the overall plan, DesignGroup relocated the existing Nursery into a Labor & Delivery unit. It provides space for 16 isolettes, keeping in mind that the unit would operate on the “rooming-in” principle moving forward. In addition, the space was backfilled with six Level III+ bed spaces that are cohorted in a cozy co-bedding arrangement. Medications, Nourishment, and Supply areas were strategically placed in the suite to maximize the unit with sufficient support and convenient access.
This project was the blending of two unique healthcare systems, each with their own Interior Finish and Design Intent standards. Each area needed to provide the look and feel of the respective system so that it was easily recognizable as soon as patients entered the space. The character of one needed to merge into another, while providing the comfort and care expected by all. These expectations created a unique opportunity to work with the user groups of both healthcare systems, not only to match the level of care provided to patients and families, but to the staff for both organizations as well.
