Addition and Renovation

Morris Hospital

Streamlined and holistic design

Prior to this project, DesignGroup worked closely with Morris Hospital to develop a Master Facility Plan that took a holistic view of the entire Morris Hospital system. It resulted in a multiple phase plan that is currently underway with a completion date of 2021.

Phase One has been completed and includes the relocation of the Emergency Department and other services to streamline wayfinding for visitors by creating one "front door." The main reception desk and registration kiosks are located adjacent to the front door for ease of locating staff to assist you. The curve of the main concourse leads you through the front of the hospital with the new Emergency Department and Infusion Therapy Center on either end. While natural points for wayfinding are created along the way, the path leads patients and visitors to Registration, Surgery Waiting, Obstetrics, and Lab/Blood Draw.

The new Emergency Department was made possible by the relocation of the administrative wing to allow for more clinical space on the first floor. It features a rapid care area for quick treatment of low acuity patients and the number of treatment stations increased from 11 to 17. The stations include: 1 Trauma Room, 1 Treatment Room, 1 SANE/Exam, 1 SAFE/Exam, 2 Rapid Care Stations, and 10 Exam Rooms.

In addition to the lobby renovation and new Emergency Department, Phase One also involved creating a new infusion department. It features four private bays and one private room, which all include windows to allow visibility to the outdoors and natural light for patients and staff. Patients can be here for up to eight hours a day and views to the outside can help reduce stress. Another benefit to these private bays is the ability to practice social distancing for patients and staff during the current pandemic. Many patients receiving these treatments cannot miss treatments or might be immunocomprised making them a vulnerable population.

The new recovery department allows family members to join patients during their recovery time. By also having close proximity to the departments that patients are being recovered from allows for the same staff during the procedures to provide recovery care as well. One face of care for the length of their stay.
