Improving operations and patient experience

One-way patient flow was a key factor in the design of this facility. Once inside the door, clinic patients are directed upstairs while surgery patients register near the entrance. Surgery patients are moved efficiently from pre-op to surgery and are transferred from the operating room through the opposite door they entered so as not to encounter an incoming patient. Patients move from PACU to post-op and exit the facility through a door separate from those entering to provide privacy from incoming patients and families. Not only is the experience and efficiency of the plan beneficial for patients and families, but it is also critical for the medical and nursing staff within the facility.

Notably, this is the first outpatient facility to incorporate Nationwide Children's branding standards

The first floor outpatient surgery department consists of 4 operating rooms, 12 private Pre-Op rooms, 6 Phase I Recovery bays, and 11 private Phase II Recovery rooms.

The second floor houses 2 outpatient clinics with a portion of one clinic dedicated to Ear, Nose, Throat and Audiology. The remainder of the second floor is shelled for future expansion. Design features include a two-story volume lobby that is used by both surgery and clinic visitors, waiting rooms with large windows and skylights, and a park-like outdoor space for patients and families.

Due to the success of the facility, in April 2014, DesignGroup renovated a 2,570 SF shelled space into a physicians suite. The new suite included space for 12 exam rooms and support space to be shared by three physicians.
