"Extending the Cleveland Clinic’s mission to provide world-class, patient-first healing environments,” its Fairview branch acknowledged the need for a more efficient emergency department and modern Intensive Care Unit. The creation of a new sweeping entry concourse provided both a new main and ED entry sequence that clarifies wayfinding and improves the customer experience. The concourse accommodates distinct drop-off zones for adult and pediatric emergency patients, as well as providing a fresh entrance to the hospital adjacent to the parking garage. Internally, the highly public concourse provides a distinct circulation pattern separating patient and public traffic, a refreshed gift shop and the space for a cafe.
The new ED has 56 beds with 12 beds for observation. The new ICU has 38 private rooms with the provision to add 12 more beds as well as effective support space. A new Split-Flow Processing Model was designed to separate low and high acuity patients into separate paths to reduce wait times. The concept allows patients in need of minor procedures to be seen, treated, and released quickly, while directing patients of high acuity to their corresponding path of care. The results are evident as throughput increased ED visits, resulting in reduced wait times and patient satisfaction in emergency room experience. Door-to-doctor times were also improved by providing the ED the capability to perform bedside registration, checkout, and discharge. This allows for a more efficient use of staff and patients’ time by not moving the patient from the care giving room. The spaces allow for the accommodation of family members.
