Enhancing the Patient Journey

As part of The James at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the new James Outpatient Care is located on Ohio State’s West Campus at the intersection of Kenny Road and Woody Hayes Drive. The two-story, light-filled atrium greets patients as they enter the building. The first floor public space is anchored by a prominent reception desk, public dining area with an outdoor terrace, and central registration to serve the building.

Phase One (approx. 367,000 SF) included a large perioperative/ procedure center with 8 operating rooms and support, Interventional Radiology, Extended Recovery Unit, Imaging, Lab, and Pharmacy. It also includes cancer and non-cancer medical center clinics with supportive infusion, radiation therapy, faculty/education support, and a Proton Therapy Center with 3 vaults and supportive imaging, exam, prep/recovery, administration and Proton management/maintenance services. This is the first Proton Therapy Center in Central Ohio and is a partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Phase One also includes a 600 car parking garage, which will expanded to 2,000 cars in later phases.

The goal for Phase One was to relocate a majority of OSUWMC Doan/Rhodes/James ambulatory surgical/procedure services to a lower cost setting that supports patient convenience while still including future paths to accommodate growth and operational optimization for clinics, infusion, radiation therapy and faculty services for cancer and non-cancer services. To cater to this patient population, various elements were thoughtfully located to provide an enhanced patient journey – intuitive wayfinding, clear access to restrooms & seating areas have been located along major circulation paths to provide moments of respite. These were all important elements that were outlined in DesignGroup’s Patient Experience Mapping exercise.

This project is in collaboration with Perkins+Will. DesignGroup is leading the design and documentation of the interiors.
