New Hospital Tower

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Innovative Medical Treatments Require Unprecedented Facilities

In 2015 and 2016 DesignGroup worked closely with The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center stakeholders to program, plan, stack, and budget the new $1.8 billion inpatient hospital tower and secure board approval. Subsequently, DesignGroup and HDR were awarded the architectural contract for this work and are currently completing construction administration for this design.

DesignGroup has multiple scopes within this very complex project, including full fit-out of nine floors of the tower’s “knuckle”, a zone of the building adjacent to the existing James Comprehensive Care Center. This 84,000-SF zone includes 12 additional Intensive Care Unit beds and 72 additional Progressive Care Unit beds for the James, along with multiple additional programs in support of the new University Hospital Tower, including a neurodiagnostic suite, satellite imaging, a dialysis clinic, and additional teaming and support spaces. The team worked with OSU and HDR to coordinate brand standards in this portion of the building, requiring careful attention to associations with various components of the hospital.

DesignGroup also led the planning, interiors, and construction documents for an all-new imaging department with a full complement of imaging modalities supporting the new tower and multiple nutritional services program elements. Our in-house BIM Manager oversaw the collaborative BIM environment for the 1.5 million SF New Hospital Tower and worked closely with the university to ensure it met the BIM Project Delivery Standards.
