Design that endures.

Interior Design

Design for human connection.

Interior design focuses on sensory details — touch, feel, acoustics, and composition. These are the elements that shape how people feel in a space. We believe the human experience can be enhanced through good interior design, and not only solve problems but create functional beauty and a sense of identity unique to each opportunity.

Leading with empathy, experience, and evidence-based principles.

Create an Emotional Connection to Purpose and Place

We seamlessly align interior design with architecture and engineering to achieve a single vision that combines real-world function and stunning aesthetics into a cohesive whole.

Deeply Experienced and Accredited

Our designers hold a variety of certifications and accreditations, offering expertise in a wide range of markets, from healthcare and education to workplace and civic.

The Benefit of Full integration

Not all architecture firms have a complete interior design studio in-house. DesignGroup has for decades, because we consider it a crucial part of what we do. Our teams are not siloed or self-contained – we design space, solve problems, and execute collaboratively in every phase.

Reflect Your Personality, Elevate Your Culture

Interior design should reflect the unique personality and mission of your organization. We will guide you to uncover your true identity and how to visually represent what that means to you.

Aesthetics That Are Functional

We also improve functional needs such as wayfinding, noise reduction, and more. We work closely with clients to listen to their needs and create win-win solutions. Space that’s smart and beautiful? You can have it all.

Closely integrated, creatively inspired.

Interior design can provide immersive experiences that alight every human sense. Or it can minimize and streamline those elements for a different context. In every case, it’s about functional solutions on a personal scale. From wayfinding to comfort to fixtures, our Interior Design team works seamlessly with our architects to create elevated experiences for specific user needs.

Elevated Interior Design

Successful interior design is about three-dimensional place making, which includes intuitive wayfinding, material and finish selections, lighting solutions, and supporting functional needs.

Space Planning & Programming

We work with you to build a program that is seamless, from planning to programming. Interiors come to life as program elements define and shape your environment.

Furniture, Artwork, Signage, and Brand Integration

To take your space to an even deeper level of integration we can include furniture selection and specification, signage, art integration, environmental graphics, and donor recognition.

Architecture

Achieve the best version of your organization.

We manage the complexity of architecture so you feel listened to and fully engaged in a solution your stakeholders truly believe in. Because the solution won’t just achieve an objective — it will change lives.

Design that inspires. Partnership that endures.

Decades of Award-Winning Design

Virtually all of our projects earn acclaim. Awards are never the goal, but we do take pride when peers and industry media recognize our work.

Upfront Alignment for a Shared Vision

We listen to and absorb our clients’ hopes and goals, and lead them to achieve their mission in profoundly beautiful ways. Our hands-on visioning process clarifies what you need and how we’ll achieve it.

Clear and Consistent Communication

We work hard to assure clarity and alignment, eliminate surprises, and empower smart decision making. So you feel total confidence in the concept, execution, and result.

Sensitive to What Matters Most

Budgets, schedules, and design intent. Each is vitally important and never overlooked. We advocate for you with communities, boards, and contractors. Because no one likes surprises.

BIM Enables Great Design

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an essential tool for architectural projects of any scale. We rely on it to communicate design, resolve potential issues, and make crucial changes in real time.

Continuous Quality Review

It ensures ongoing design refinement and accuracy of construction documents. We’re with you through the end, representing the vision side-by-side with the teams that build the project.

You have the opportunity to build something amazing. Make the most of it.

Jennifer Horvath

President, Managing Principal

Every now and then you have a moment that stands out. When you know your life is about to change. That’s how Jennifer remembers her interview at DesignGroup more than a decade ago.

“I was yearning to be challenged by my colleagues, and to challenge all those around me,” she recalls. “It was clear on day one this was the journey I could be on. Yet I couldn’t imagine how fulfilling working with this team would be every day. It continues to give back.”

A lot of that giving comes from her teammates, who continue to empower, challenge, and motivate her. DesignGroup’s uniquely collaborative spirit, the push and pull of vision and execution, is what drives her and everyone around her. As president of the firm, Jennifer’s role is to define and develop business, strategy, and growth. Not surprisingly, her favorite accomplishment isn’t a specific project, but the creation and cultivation of DesignGroup’s thriving Pittsburgh office. Growing it from an idea to a studio of 13 professionals is a career highlight.

Outside work, Jennifer loves spending time with family and friends – usually (no surprise) doing the entertaining. And when that’s not enough for her seemingly endless source of energy, she goes outside for a run. Nothing slows her down.

Sherm Moreland

AIA, ACHA, LEED AP BD+C

Chief Executive Officer

Sherm Moreland is DesignGroup's trusted CEO. In 1998, Sherm joined DesignGroup wanting to both excel in his technical role as a healthcare planner and contribute to the growth, prominence, and reputation of the firm. His passion, curiosity, willingness to lead, and bias for action saw him quickly rise to Managing Partner and eventually to CEO in 2008. Systems thinking, building a resilient organization, life-long learning, and elevating expertise and customer service have been hallmarks of his approach to leadership and request of others.

A range of life experiences prepared him for this role. Sherm can’t remember a time when he didn't want to be an architect, and as a first generation high school graduate, he had to scrap to achieve his career goal. He worked as a draftsman for a local factory starting his senior year in high school, and did it every weekend and holiday he could to help pay for college. His educational journey took him through three community colleges and two major universities in pursuit of his undergraduate (Kent State) and graduate (University of Colorado Buffalo) degrees.

While in Colorado for graduate school, Sherm worked with the AIA to lead the state’s second state-wide award for design excellence in ADA. “This was a big deal,” he recalls. “Design for the disabled had just been signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. It was landmark civil rights legislation to increase access and opportunity for people with disabilities across community life.”

Sherm is a board-certified healthcare architect, speaks and publishes nationally, and is a frequent contributor to research by the Advisory Board Company. He has devoted his career to the programming and planning of complex, award-winning healthcare and education projects totaling more than 25 million square feet nationwide. DesignGroup clients benefit from his unique depth of industry-specific knowledge and understanding of the changing trends that lead to best-practice thinking and innovation.

Sherm understands the life-changing possibilities that higher education and cultural institutions present to young people. And he embraces every opportunity DesignGroup has to plan and build facilities that make those aspirations possible, whether it’s a modest community college dorm or a billion-dollar learning hospital. Sherm is quick to credit many mentors throughout his career, from his first boss at the factory (“He challenged me, supported me, and gave me responsibilities that no 20-year-old ever gets that early in their career”) to DesignGroup’s previous CEO, Bob Vennemeyer, who defined the idea of “steady hand on the wheel” and set a model for kindness and dedication that every DesignGroup leader follows today.
